Daily quote


When hungry, eat.
When cold, put on clothes
Even children three feet tall,
Are aware of these things.
The teaching beyond doctrine
Is transparently clear;
Why should you have your eyes open
And still act foolishly?
Someone asked me for one of my
Coarse comments,
So I wrote out the above gatha
As a response.



Isshi Bunshu (1608 CE-1646 CE), Isshi Bunshu, A Rinzai-sect Zen monk, poet and calligrapher, Isshi was born in Kyoto as the son of a court noble. At fourteen, he entered Shokokuji Temple in Kyoto, and in 1626 he moved to Nanshuji Temple in Osaka to study under Takuan Soho. When Takuan was exiled to the north in 1629, Isshi went with him and spent a year caring for his needs.
