If enlightenment is, among other things, complete selflessness, then only when we have rid ourselves of selfishness to the point where we are no longer greedy, even for the fruits of training, do we really reach the “goal” of the Way.



Francis Dojun Cook (1930 CE-2006 CE), Francis Dojun Cook was a professor of Buddhist studies at University of California, Riverside, and the director of translations at the Institute for Transcultural Studies in Los Angeles. In addition to How to Raise an Ox: Zen Practice as Taught in Master Dogen's Shobogenzo, Cook also wrote Hua-yen Buddhism: The Jewel Net of Indra.
